The Douglas fir tree is extremely common in western Oregon. The tree can survive for several hundreds or perhaps a thousand years, with mature trees ranging from 100 ft/30 m to 320ft/98 m tall and up to 8 ft/2.4 m in diameter.
This photograph happens to be from the “Constitution Grove” on the Aufderheide Scenic Byway. The byway heads north from the Westfir/Oakridge area near Hwy-58, ending on Hwy-126 near McKenzie Bridge. A beautiful drive, which I prefer in the south to north direction. Views like this do exist in forests all over the state.
Odd trivia: The Avenger minesweepers are the only wooden ships still currently in use by the United States Navy. The hull on the ships, is made of Douglas fir.
