Pronghorn

Pronghorn

Sometimes called a pronghorn antelope, it is not a true antelope. It is the only surviving member of the family Antilocapridae. As a member of the superfamily Giraffoidea, the pronghorn’s closest living relatives are the giraffe and okapi.

Widely considered to be the second fasted land mammal, behind the cheetah. The pronghorn can reach 55 mph/88kph for short distance, but can run distance at 35mph/55kph.

Pronghorns are built for speed, not for jumping. They have a large windpipe to bring air into their large lungs. A large heart then pumps the blood. They also have cushioned toes that absorb foot shock when running.

Where can you see one? In central and eastern Oregon, generally away from people. If you see some, you are lucky.
